Many people are going to disagree with this advice because degrees are the most common way of giving credits, but this had to be said. There are other ways and you have pointed them out aptly.

What I would like to add is that, you don't necessarily need to get into the big firms. Even smaller startups can have good data science roles. With that experiences you can go a long way.
